Getting the best streaming quality from your Firestick involves optimising a few settings on both the device and your network. Here's how to do it.
Set the Correct Resolution
Go to Settings > Display & Sounds > Display > Video Resolution. Select the highest resolution your TV supports — 4K Ultra HD for 4K TVs, 1080p for Full HD TVs. If you're not sure, Auto is usually correct and saves you from a mismatch.
Enable HDR and Dolby Vision
On 4K Firestick models, HDR settings are under Settings > Display & Sounds > Display > Video Resolution. If your TV supports HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision, enable these settings. They significantly improve contrast and colour. Note that your TV must support these formats.
Audio Settings
For surround sound systems: Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio > Dolby Digital Output. Select Dolby Digital Plus if your amplifier or soundbar supports it. For standard TV speakers, select PCM Stereo for the most compatible output.
Optimise Your Wi-Fi for Streaming
- Use the 5GHz Wi-Fi band — less congested and faster than 2.4GHz
- Position your router within a reasonable distance of the TV
- Use the HDMI extender cable to improve the Firestick's antenna position
- Reduce the number of simultaneous streaming devices competing for bandwidth
For detailed internet requirements, see our Firestick internet guide.
In-App Quality Settings
Many streaming apps have their own quality settings. Netflix, for example, lets you set streaming quality to Auto, Save Data, or High. For the best picture, set quality to High or Auto within each app you use regularly.
IPTV Streaming Quality
If you are using IPTV, the quality of the stream depends on the channel quality and your internet speed. For the clearest picture, choose HD or FHD channels where available. If you experience buffering, try switching to an SD version temporarily. For IPTV setup, see our IPTV for Firestick guide. FirestickHub packages include a quality IPTV subscription with 25,000+ channels.
Check Your HDMI Signal Quality
Older or lower-quality HDMI cables can limit picture quality. For 4K with HDR, use an HDMI 2.0 or higher cable. The included HDMI extender cable is suitable. If you're using a separate HDMI cable or switch, ensure it supports the bandwidth your content requires.
