The Alexa Voice Remote included with all current Fire TV Stick models uses AAA batteries. This guide covers everything you need to know about the remote's batteries.
What Batteries Does a Firestick Remote Use?
All current Firestick remotes use 2 x AAA batteries. These are standard alkaline AAA batteries, widely available at supermarkets, electronics shops, and online.
How Long Do Firestick Remote Batteries Last?
Battery life varies depending on usage, but typical batteries last between 3 and 6 months under normal use. If you use Alexa voice commands frequently, batteries may deplete faster as this uses more power. The battery compartment is on the back of the remote — open it by sliding it downward.
How to Replace the Batteries
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the remote
- Slide the battery cover downward (towards the bottom of the remote) and lift it off
- Remove the old batteries
- Insert 2 new AAA batteries, ensuring the + and - ends are aligned with the markings inside the compartment
- Replace the battery cover by sliding it back upward until it clicks
Signs Your Batteries Need Replacing
- The remote is unresponsive or slow to respond
- Buttons require multiple presses to register
- The Firestick occasionally fails to wake from standby
- The voice button does not respond consistently
Even batteries that are not fully depleted can cause intermittent remote issues. If your remote is behaving unpredictably, replace the batteries as the first step before trying other troubleshooting.
Can I Use Rechargeable Batteries?
Yes — NiMH rechargeable AAA batteries work in Firestick remotes. They deliver slightly less voltage (1.2V vs 1.5V for alkaline) which may result in slightly shorter battery life between charges, but they function normally.
If New Batteries Don't Fix It
If the remote is still not working after replacing the batteries, the issue may be with the Bluetooth pairing rather than the batteries. See our Firestick remote troubleshooting guide and our remote pairing guide.
