How a Firestick Works — The Short Version
A Firestick is a small computer that connects to your TV via HDMI and to the internet via Wi-Fi. When you select a video, it fetches the data over your broadband connection and displays it on your TV in real time. All processing happens inside the Firestick — your TV simply shows the output.
Step by Step: What Happens When You Stream
Power on
The Firestick receives power from a USB cable connected to a mains adapter. It boots the Fire TV operating system — this takes around 30 seconds.
Connect to Wi-Fi
The Firestick connects wirelessly to your home broadband router, giving it access to the internet.
Display via HDMI
The Firestick sends its video and audio output to your TV through the HDMI connection. Your TV switches to that input and shows the Fire TV interface.
Select content
You open an app — for example an IPTV player or a streaming service — and choose what you want to watch.
Data fetched and decoded
The Firestick requests the video from the provider's servers over the internet. The video arrives in compressed chunks, the Firestick's processor decodes them, and the picture appears on screen.
Remote control via Bluetooth
The Alexa Voice Remote communicates with the Firestick via Bluetooth. No line-of-sight needed — it works even if the Firestick is hidden behind the TV.
What Is Inside a Firestick?
- A processor (CPU) that runs the Fire TV operating system and all apps
- RAM (memory) for running multiple processes at once
- Internal storage for the OS, installed apps, and cached data
- A Wi-Fi chip for wireless internet (Wi-Fi 5, 6, or 6E depending on model)
- A Bluetooth chip for the voice remote
- An HDMI connector for video and audio output to the TV
- A USB port for power input
How Does Buffering Work?
The Firestick downloads a few seconds of video ahead of what you are currently watching. This small buffer means a brief dip in your internet speed will not immediately cause an interruption. If your connection drops significantly, the buffer empties and playback pauses — this is called buffering.
For smooth HD streaming, we recommend at least 10 Mbps. For 4K, at least 25 Mbps. See our full guide on Firestick internet requirements.
How Does IPTV Work on a Firestick?
IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) delivers live TV channels over the internet rather than via satellite or cable. You install a compatible IPTV player app on the Firestick, enter your subscription credentials, and the app streams live channels directly to your TV.
FirestickHub packages come with a 1-Year IPTV subscription already bundled in. Once set up, you have access to 25,000+ live channels and 140,000+ on-demand films. Full setup instructions are in our IPTV for Firestick guide.
