Connecting a Firestick to a TV — Quick Answer
Plug the Fire TV Stick into an available HDMI port on your television, connect the USB power cable to the Firestick and the adapter to a mains socket, then switch your TV's input to the correct HDMI channel. The Fire TV setup screen will appear.
A Firestick works with any TV that has an HDMI port. You do not need a smart TV. See our guide on Firestick TV compatibility.
What You Need Before You Start
- Your Fire TV Stick (all models connect the same way)
- A television with at least one available HDMI port
- A mains power socket near the TV
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password
- An Amazon account (free to create)
How to Connect a Firestick to a TV — Step by Step
Locate the HDMI port on your TV
HDMI ports are rectangular sockets usually found on the back or side of your television. They are labelled HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc. You can use any available HDMI port.
Plug in the Firestick
Insert the Fire TV Stick directly into the HDMI port. If the port is in a tight space or at an awkward angle, use the included HDMI extender cable — plug the extender into the TV and then the Firestick into the extender.
Connect the power cable
Plug the micro-USB end of the power cable into the side of the Firestick, then plug the USB adapter into a nearby mains socket and switch it on.
Switch your TV's input
Using your TV remote, switch the TV's input or source to the HDMI channel you used. On most remotes this is an 'Input', 'Source', or 'AV' button. Select the HDMI number that matches where you plugged in the Firestick.
Follow the on-screen setup
The Fire TV setup wizard will appear. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to your Amazon account.
Install apps or enter IPTV credentials
Once setup is complete, install your preferred apps from the Fire TV app store, or enter your IPTV login credentials if you have a subscription.
How to Connect Firestick via HDMI Extender
Amazon includes an HDMI extender cable in the Firestick box. This short cable plugs into your TV's HDMI port, and the Firestick plugs into the other end. It is useful when:
- Your TV's HDMI port is recessed into the back panel and the Firestick does not fit flush
- The Firestick is too close to the TV cabinet wall when plugged directly in
- You want to improve Wi-Fi signal reception by positioning the Firestick away from the TV body
How to Change HDMI Input on Your TV
The method varies slightly by TV brand, but the process is the same:
- Samsung: Press 'Source' on the remote, select the correct HDMI input
- LG: Press 'Input' or 'Source', choose the HDMI number
- Sony: Press the 'Input' or 'Input Select' button
- Panasonic: Press 'Input' on the remote
- Hisense / TCL / others: Press 'Input' or 'Source' on your remote
If you are not sure which HDMI number to select, unplug the Firestick briefly, note which input goes blank on your TV, then reconnect it — that is your HDMI input number.
Firestick Connected but No Picture?
- Check you have selected the correct HDMI input on the TV
- Try unplugging and replugging the Firestick
- Ensure the power adapter is switched on at the mains
- Try a different HDMI port on the TV
- Use the HDMI extender cable if you are not already
- Check that the HDMI extender is pushed fully in at both ends

Yes. The Firestick connects via HDMI only. If your TV does not have HDMI, the Firestick cannot be used with it.
Use the HDMI extender cable included in the box. It gives the Firestick more clearance.
Note the number printed next to the HDMI socket on your TV (e.g. HDMI 1, HDMI 2) and select that number from your TV's input/source menu.
