Can the Firestick Remote Control Your TV?
Yes. The Alexa Voice Remote included with your Firestick can control basic TV functions including volume, mute, and power — as long as your TV supports it. There are two ways this works: HDMI-CEC and the Fire TV TV Controls feature.
This guide is about programming the Firestick remote to control your TV. For pairing the remote to the Firestick itself, see our Firestick remote pairing guide.
Method 1: HDMI-CEC (Auto)
HDMI-CEC allows devices connected via HDMI to control each other. If your TV supports it, the Firestick remote should control TV volume and power automatically once you plug in and select the HDMI input.
Most modern TVs support HDMI-CEC but may have it disabled by default or under different brand names:
HDMI-CEC Brand Names
- Samsung: Anynet+
- LG: SimpLink
- Sony: Bravia Sync
- Panasonic: VIERA Link
- Philips: EasyLink
- Other brands: HDMI-CEC or similar
To enable HDMI-CEC, go into your TV's settings menu and search for one of the names above. Enable it. Then on your Firestick, go to Settings > Display & Sounds > HDMI CEC Device Control and ensure it is turned on.
Method 2: Fire TV TV Controls (Manual Setup)
If HDMI-CEC doesn't work or your TV doesn't support it, you can use the Firestick's built-in TV Controls feature to manually program the remote to control your TV's volume and power buttons.
Step-by-Step: Setting Up TV Controls
- From the Fire TV home screen, go to Settings
- Select Equipment Control or TV Controls (the exact wording varies by Fire TV software version)
- Select Add Device or TV
- Select your TV brand from the list
- Follow the on-screen instructions — the Firestick will send infrared signals and ask you to confirm when your TV responds
- Test the volume and power buttons once setup is complete
The volume and power buttons on the remote use infrared (IR). For this to work, you need line of sight between the remote and the TV — make sure nothing is blocking the front of the remote when pressing these buttons.
Troubleshooting
Volume buttons don't control my TV
First check that HDMI-CEC is enabled on your TV. If your TV doesn't support HDMI-CEC, use the TV Controls setup in Settings. If you've completed the TV Controls setup but volume still doesn't work, try pointing the remote more directly at the TV and not at the Firestick — the IR emitter needs line of sight to the TV.
Power button doesn't turn off TV
The power button behaviour depends on your TV's HDMI-CEC support. Some TVs will power off via the remote; others won't respond to power commands even with CEC enabled. Check your TV's CEC settings.
I can't find TV Controls in Settings
The location may vary depending on your Fire TV software version. Look under Settings > Equipment Control, Settings > TV, or Settings > Display & Sounds > HDMI CEC. If you have recently purchased a package from FirestickHub and need help, contact us via WhatsApp.
