Firestick HDMI Troubleshooting — No Signal, Black Screen and Fixes

Published June 2025 · Updated September 2026 · FirestickHub

Most Firestick display problems trace back to the HDMI connection. This guide covers every common HDMI-related issue and how to fix it.

No Signal / Black Screen

The most common cause of "no signal" is simply being on the wrong TV input. Press the Source or Input button on your TV remote and select the HDMI port number that the Firestick is connected to. If you are unsure which port, check the back of the TV — the Firestick should be visible plugged into one of the HDMI sockets.

Reseat the HDMI Connection

Firmly push the Firestick or HDMI extender cable into the HDMI port. A loose connection causes intermittent signal loss, flickering, or no signal at all. If the Firestick plug seems loose, try a different HDMI port on the TV.

Use the HDMI Extender Cable

If the Firestick is plugged directly into a port but fits poorly or at an angle due to limited space, use the included HDMI extender cable. This short cable creates more clearance and also improves the Firestick's Wi-Fi antenna position.

Resolution Problems — Wrong Picture or Overscan

If the picture looks wrong (oversized, wrong aspect ratio, or missing edges), the Firestick may be set to a resolution your TV doesn't handle well. Go to Settings > Display & Sounds > Display > Video Resolution and select a compatible resolution. Alternatively, hold Back + Menu simultaneously for 10 seconds to reset to auto.

HDCP Errors

HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) errors usually appear as a message stating that the content cannot be displayed. This typically indicates a compatibility issue between the Firestick and the TV or any HDMI splitter/switch in between. Remove any HDMI switch and connect directly to the TV. Restarting the Firestick usually resolves temporary HDCP errors.

Try a Different HDMI Port

TVs have multiple HDMI ports and they can be damaged or unreliable individually. If you're having persistent problems with one port, try moving the Firestick to a different HDMI port and see if the problem follows.
