Firestick Black Screen Fix — Why It Happens and How to Solve It

Published June 2025 · Updated September 2026 · FirestickHub

A black screen on a Firestick is alarming but usually straightforward to fix. Here are the causes in order of likelihood and how to resolve each one.

1. Check the TV Input/Source

The most common cause of a black screen is being on the wrong TV input. Press the Source or Input button on your TV remote and cycle through inputs until you see the Fire TV interface. Note which HDMI number your Firestick is connected to.

2. Check the HDMI Connection

Remove the Firestick from the HDMI port and reinsert it firmly. If using a short HDMI extender cable, try connecting directly without it, or replace the extender. Try a different HDMI port on the TV. Clean the HDMI connector gently if there is visible dust or debris.

3. Check the Power Supply

A Firestick underpowered by a TV USB port rather than a mains adapter can result in a black screen. Check that the USB power cable is connected to the included mains adapter and that it is plugged into a working wall socket. Avoid TV USB ports as a power source.

4. Resolution Mismatch

If the Firestick has been set to a resolution your TV doesn't support, the screen may appear black. Hold the Back button and the Menu button simultaneously for 10 seconds — this resets the display resolution back to the automatic setting.

5. Restart the Firestick

If you can hear audio but see no picture, or the screen is intermittently black, restart by unplugging the power cable, waiting 30 seconds, and replugging it. The Firestick will reboot.

6. HDMI-CEC Issues

In some cases, HDMI-CEC (the feature that lets the Firestick remote control the TV) can cause the TV to switch inputs or enter standby. Try disabling HDMI-CEC on your TV temporarily to test.

7. Factory Reset as a Last Resort

If none of the above resolves the issue, a factory reset may be necessary. If you can access the menus, go to Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults. If the screen is completely black and you cannot see menus, press the Back + right directional button simultaneously on the remote for 10–15 seconds to initiate a recovery reset. See our full reset guide.

If your Firestick was working and went black suddenly, try a different HDMI port first — this resolves the issue in the majority of cases.
