A slow Firestick is frustrating, but most performance problems have straightforward solutions. This guide covers the most effective ways to speed up any Fire TV Stick model.
1. Restart the Firestick
The most effective single step is a restart. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Restart. This clears the memory and closes background processes. Many performance issues are resolved by a simple restart. Alternatively, unplug the power cable, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
2. Clear App Caches
Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications. Select each app and choose Clear Cache. Clearing cached data removes temporary files that accumulate over time. See our complete cache clearing guide for more.
3. Uninstall Unused Apps
Every installed app takes up storage and some run in the background. Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, select apps you no longer use, and choose Uninstall. Freeing storage space noticeably improves performance on older models.
4. Improve Your Wi-Fi Connection
A weak Wi-Fi signal causes buffering, slow loading, and poor streaming quality. To improve it:
- Move your router closer to the TV, or the TV closer to the router
- Use the 5GHz Wi-Fi band instead of 2.4GHz if your router offers it
- Reduce interference from other devices
- Consider using the HDMI extender cable to position the Firestick away from the back of the TV — this improves antenna reception
- If possible, use the Fire TV Cube with its Ethernet adapter for a wired connection
5. Keep the Software Updated
Outdated software can cause performance issues. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for System Update. Keeping your Firestick updated ensures you have the latest performance improvements. See our Firestick update guide.
6. Close Background Apps
Apps running in the background consume memory. Press the Home button to return to the home screen, then navigate to any app that was open and close it properly via the remote's Menu button > Stop.
7. Disable Autoplay
The home screen autoplays video trailers, which uses processing power. Go to Settings > Preferences > Featured Content and disable Featured Autoplay.
8. Factory Reset as a Last Resort
If nothing else works, a factory reset returns the Firestick to its original state, which often fully resolves persistent performance issues. You will need to set it up again and reinstall apps. See our Firestick reset guide.
