How to Update a Firestick — Quick Method

Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for Updates. If an update is available, select Install Update. The Firestick will download and install the update, then restart automatically.

Step-by-Step: Update Fire TV Software

1

From the home screen, go to Settings

Navigate to the top menu on the Fire TV home screen and select Settings (the cog icon).

2

Select My Fire TV

Scroll along the Settings menu and select My Fire TV. On some older firmware versions this may say Device.

3

Select About

Inside My Fire TV, select About.

4

Select Check for Updates

Fire TV will check Amazon's servers for any available software updates.

5

Install if available

If an update is found, you will see an Install Update option. Select it. If it says Your Fire TV is up to date, no action is needed.

6

Wait for restart

The Firestick will download, install, and restart automatically. This usually takes 5–15 minutes depending on update size and connection speed.

Keep your Firestick connected to power and Wi-Fi during the update. Do not unplug it mid-update, as this can corrupt the firmware.

Does a Firestick Update Automatically?

By default, Fire TV downloads software updates automatically when connected to Wi-Fi and in standby mode. The installation happens in the background and the device restarts when the update is ready. You may notice your Firestick restart overnight — this is normal and is how automatic updates work.

How to Turn Off Automatic Updates

Go to Settings → Preferences → Privacy Settings → Device Usage Data. While you cannot entirely prevent Amazon's OS updates, you can limit background activity. Some users also go to Settings → Applications → Appstore → Automatic Updates to control whether individual app updates happen automatically.

Turning off automatic updates means your device may miss important security patches. This is generally not recommended unless you have a specific reason.

How to Update Individual Apps on Firestick

1

From the home screen, search for the app name

Use the search bar to find the app you want to update.

2

Select the app from results

Open the app's page in the Fire TV app store.

3

If an update is available, an Update button will appear

Click Update to download and install the latest version.

4

Or go to Your Apps & Channels

Hover over an installed app, press the Menu button (three lines), and select More Info to see if an update is available.
