How to Reset a Firestick — Two Methods
There are two ways to reset a Fire TV Stick: a soft restart (reboots the device, keeps all data) and a factory reset (wipes everything, restoring it to out-of-the-box state). Choose the method that matches what you need.
Method 1: Restart (Soft Reset)
Use this if your Firestick is running slowly, freezing, or not responding. A restart does not delete any apps or settings.
From the Settings menu
Go to Settings → My Fire TV → Restart. Select Restart to confirm.
Or from the remote
Hold the Select button and the Play/Pause button simultaneously for 5 seconds. The Firestick will restart.
Or unplug the power
Unplug the power adapter from the mains, wait 30 seconds, plug back in. This is a cold restart.
Method 2: Factory Reset (Full Reset)
A factory reset deletes all downloaded apps, saved passwords, and personalised settings. Your Amazon account will also be deregistered from the device. Only use this if you are preparing to sell the device or troubleshooting a persistent problem that nothing else has fixed.
How to Factory Reset from Settings
Go to Settings
From the Fire TV home screen, navigate to Settings.
Select My Fire TV
Scroll along and select My Fire TV (or Device on older firmware).
Select Reset to Factory Defaults
Scroll down to find this option and select it.
Confirm
A warning will appear. Select Reset to confirm. The process takes a few minutes.
Set up again
After resetting, the Firestick returns to the initial setup screen. Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in again.
How to Factory Reset from the Remote (Without TV Menu)
If the Firestick is frozen or unresponsive and you cannot access Settings:
Hold the Right button and Back button
Press and hold both simultaneously for 10 seconds.
Wait for the countdown
A reset screen will appear with a countdown timer. Wait for it to complete, or select Continue to proceed immediately.
Device will reset
The Firestick wipes itself and restarts to the setup screen.
After a Factory Reset — What Happens?
- All downloaded apps are removed
- Your Amazon account is deregistered from the device
- Wi-Fi settings are cleared
- All personalised settings return to defaults
- You will need to complete the initial setup again (Wi-Fi, Amazon account)
- Any IPTV credentials will need to be re-entered
If you bought your Firestick from FirestickHub and need to re-enter your IPTV credentials after a reset, contact us on WhatsApp and we will send them to you again.

A restart often helps buffering issues. A full factory reset rarely fixes buffering — that is usually a network speed or signal issue. See our troubleshooting guide.
A factory reset does, yes — apps, accounts, settings, all gone. A soft restart does not delete anything.
That is a separate process. See our guide on how to reset a Firestick remote.
