Restarting your Firestick is one of the most effective troubleshooting steps and takes less than a minute. Here are three ways to do it.
Method 1: Restart via Settings
- From the Fire TV home screen, navigate to Settings
- Select My Fire TV
- Select Restart
- Confirm by selecting Restart again
The Firestick will shut down and reboot. This takes approximately 30–45 seconds.
Method 2: Remote Shortcut
Simultaneously hold the Select button (centre of the directional pad) and the Play/Pause button on the remote for about 5 seconds. The Firestick will restart automatically. This works without needing to navigate through menus.
Method 3: Unplug the Power Cable
Remove the USB power cable from the Firestick (or from the wall adapter). Wait 30 seconds. Reconnect. The Firestick will perform a cold boot. This is the most thorough restart method and is useful if the device is unresponsive.
When Should You Restart Your Firestick?
- The interface feels slow or unresponsive
- Apps are freezing or crashing
- Streaming apps are buffering more than usual
- After a software update has been applied
- As a first troubleshooting step for any problem
Restarting is different from a factory reset. A restart preserves all your apps, settings, and accounts. A factory reset erases everything. See our Firestick factory reset guide if you need a full reset.
