By default, Amazon Fire TV Sticks automatically download and install software updates. For most users this is beneficial, but in some cases you may want more control over when updates apply.
Should You Turn Off Automatic Updates?
Turning off automatic updates is not generally recommended. Software updates include security fixes, bug corrections, and performance improvements. Disabling them may leave your device vulnerable or cause compatibility issues over time.
That said, there are legitimate reasons to control updates: if an update caused a problem, if you want to update at a scheduled time, or if you are on a limited internet connection.
Turn Off Automatic App Updates
To disable automatic app updates (updates to installed apps, not the Fire TV OS itself):
- Go to Settings
- Select Applications
- Select Appstore
- Toggle Automatic Updates to Off
This setting controls app updates only. The Fire TV operating system updates are handled separately and cannot be disabled through the standard settings menu.
Fire TV System Updates
Amazon does not provide a user-facing toggle to disable Fire TV OS updates. System updates are managed by Amazon and apply automatically. If a specific update has caused issues, the most effective approach is to wait — Amazon typically releases corrective updates promptly when widespread problems are reported.
How to Check for Updates Manually
Instead of disabling updates, you can check for and apply updates at a time of your choosing:
- Go to Settings
- Select My Fire TV
- Select About
